World of Warcraft Wants More Of Your Money

While “Exactly how much of it?” and “What would I be paying for?” are unanswered questions, what is clear is this: Activision Blizzard wants more of your money funneling into World of Warcraft.

I played WoW for somewhere in the neighborhood of a year and a half. What I know with certainty now that I’m away from it, though, is that it’s a colossal waste of time. All I hear from friends who still play are about patches that make the game “more stupid,” and yet everyone just keeps handing over their money. Well, the loyalty of over 11 million people is being rewarded with more ways to waste your money.

The full story, short though it may be, is over here at Examiner.

I realize that I alienate a lot of people every time I slander WoW, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop doing it. Anyway, what do you think? Micro-transactions in WoW would be terrible, right? Or do you not mind paying? How many of you play WoW at all? Tell me anything and everything about your experiences with Activision Blizzard’s money printing machine in the comments.

…Can i backstab it yet? Or how about blowing it up? Or bonesawing it? Or burning it? Taking a shotgun to it? Punching it? Wrenching it? Or sniping it? Or what about shooting a rocket at it?

And thats why WoW is the heroin of the gaming world.

I’ve played WoW for well over 4 years until I finally quit. What I find a bit amusing is that people act surprised they wasted all that time and money. I knew from the start what I was doing, I still am as I moved to a new MMO. That’s why I play MMO’s in the first place, because I have nothing better to do.

My point being is that people can complain all they want, but as if guided by an invisible hand they will still enter in the credit card information, even if the price goes up.

I don’t hold any grudges against the game, I left because I was bored, I still think it’s a great game.

Really? You just had to write an article about how much you dislike WoW?

    • OriginOfBob says:

It’s not about how much I dislike WoW. It’s about WoW costing players more money in new ways.

      That’s…why I named it what I did.

      • Serge says:

As previously done already with the whole

“Pay us $30 to change a few minor variables and pointers about your character! (*cough race/faction change*)”

        *sigh*

“I realize that I alienate a lot of people every time I slander WoW”- Implying you’re slandering it at the moment.

“What I know with certainty now that I’m away from it, though, is that it’s a colossal waste of time.”- certainly slander.

When you dislike something, you tend to slander it, am I wrong? You’re using paid services that people don’t have to purchase, like they’re necessary. We both share a friend who spends …suitcases of money on WoW, literally (if they were one dollar bills),but that’s his prerogative. They give you a chance to fix errors in min/maxing your game for hardcore raiding or whatever. People like being able to fix that, even though it’s a very small increase in overall performance.

I realize that you don’t like WoW, and for some reason you’re hella (yes hella) biased against it, but no other Blizzard game (probably because it makes money). I’m not going to argue this any further, unless you just insist on it.

        • OriginOfBob says:

All I was saying is that slandering WoW wasn’t the purpose of the article. I did slander WoW, clearly. That’s because I despise it.

I think WoW is a waste of time, and I’m also an opinionated journalist. So if I write about WoW, I’m probably going to at least mention that I don’t like it.

But the purpose of the article wasn’t to say “I hate WoW,” otherwise that would have been the title, and it would have linked to an article about WoW being bad instead of one about WoW introducing new payment structures.

I know people spend tons of money. I know that’s their choice. It’s not mine, but I’m entitled to express my thoughts about WoW since I was already writing about it, and it’s my article.

I’m “hella biased” against WoW because I played it for an extended period of time, and looking back at all that time investment, got essentially nothing out of that time investment except for a better character. That means nothing to me as a person, and it wasn’t fun anymore. Patches continue to make it less and less of a worthwhile experience, in my opinion, and that leads to ill feelings towards it.

It also saddens me that so many people play games like WoW and other casual games and MMOs enough to pay recurring fees, when they could gain a skill other than chatting playing something that they don’t have to pay for more than one time.

I’m not trying to perpetuate this argument; I just think you should realize that I’m not saying I didn’t slander WoW, just that that isn’t the purpose of the article.

If it will make you feel like you somehow won or something to post again, go for it, but please understand that I wouldn’t be arguing this at all if I didn’t know you in person.
